Hattie made a modified diorama using a box, white paint,
white tissue paper and polar animals we have from various
sets.
We looked through the book Polar Animals Dictionary
and I asked Hattie to choose two animals she wanted to learn
more about. She chose the Clouded-yellow butterfly
(no surprise she chose a butterfly) and the Emperor Penguin.
For the butterfly, I brought out the easel and cut out butterfly
shapes for the girls to paint.
For the penguin, I found this craft activity from marymaking.blogspot.com
and they made these adorable penguins.
Hattie and her friend Liam made this
polar bear face from here.
We are loosely following the weefolkart.com
winter curriculum. One of the books recommended
is Nature in a Nutshell for Kids. We followed the
experiment Blubber Insulation-What Keeps a Seal
From Freezing in Icy Water? You place one hand
in very cold water, and the other hand in a plastic
bag with shortening in it to resemble the blubber.
It teaches the children that blubber protects the seals
from the icy cold water. This experiment was a hit.
And not to be outdone by his big sisters,
Cole wanted to wear his polar bear and
penguin sleeper to fit in.

Great activities. I've been meaning to try the blubber experiment but haven't gotten around to it.
Popping in from Tot School.
