Tot School Week 5-Camping/Hiking/Forest Animals

This was the last week of our Camping/Hiking/Forest Animals theme. This past week we focused on the animals: bears and foxes. We also took a trip to Muir Woods for a mini hike.
I read the book, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear," and we focused
our lessons this week around the book. We used linking cubes
to estimate how long we thought the teddy bear would be. We
then compared what Hattie's estimation was against how long
the bear actually was.

We used printouts from Making Learning Fun and sorted
M&M's, then graphed the colored candy.

Another day we sorted colored gummy bears (print out from
Other activities we worked on this week were pattern blocks,
putting colored pom poms into a bear honey jar, exploring
with colored teddy bear counters, sequencing cards and

Celie participated in some activities this week as well. I
gave her several mini cereal boxes to use as blocks. When I
first handed them to her, I told her to build with them. She sat
there with an angry look on her face and said, No Mommy. I not."
Then I showed her how to build and knock them down. She couldn't
stop laughing and this became her new favorite toy.
She also played with magnets, color wheel and teddy bear counters.
I also gave her a honey bear bottle to have her place pom poms
in. She played with that thing for an hour! I couldn't believe it.

When Liam came over, the kids made this bear cave out
of lunch bags and leaves they collected outside (Kids Soup).

I read the book, "Hattie and the Fox." It was probably
better fitted for our farm theme we are going to do in
March, but since it had Hattie's name and a fox, I just went
for it. We made this letter F fox from Totally Tots.

The science theme for this month is: Air. We read the book,
"Air is All Around You." For this lesson, Hattie learned that
air moves things. The lesson started with her blowing paint
on paper through a straw, but it quickly turned into an art project.

On Saturday we packed up the kids and drove up to Muir
Woods. It is a nice, easy little hike. We saw lots of trees,
moss and chipmunks. We ate lunch at the cafe. We ordered
the Marin Melt combo which is a grilled cheese sandwich
and tomato soup. We watched an episode of "Best Thing I
Ever Ate" on the Food Network, and this was featured. It was
good, but I think Randy's homemade tomato soup is better.

To finish off our camping theme, we cooked hot dogs and
beans over a camp stove. Notice the hot dog out of the bun?
The girls like to eat them separately.

Her favorite part of the meal? The mustard and ketchup of course.

Steph, you have put so much fun, effort and love into each of your projects this summer. What a wonderful learning experience for both of the girls. Hattie, Grandma and Grandpa may need to hire you as our math tutor in the future!
Love,
Grandma and Grandpa Hector

SO FUN! :) We are doing a camping/bears theme this week. It's so fun to see what you did. I really like the bear cave out of a lunch bag idea.
