Tot School-Camping-Forest Animals Week 4

This is our 4th week of Camping/Hiking/Forest Animals.
This past week we focused on the forest animals: birds, deer
and raccoons. We read a few books and looked up images
on Google (her favorite thing to do).

Hattie made this colorful bird (I doubt we would actually
find one of these in the forest). Kidssoup.com

Hattie made a birdhouse out of popsicle sticks and we hung
it from the chandelier in our kitchen. kidssoup.com

She made a pine cone bird feeder out of a pine cone we
picked up in Idaho, peanut butter and bird seed. Within
minutes of Randy hanging it in the tree, we had a bird and
a squirrel eat off of it.

When Liam came over, we read a book about deer. The kids
learned that baby deer are called fawns, and they are born
with white spots to help them blend into their environment
in order to protect them. The kids colored the deer brown
(kidssoup.com), and used their thumb prints to paint the
white spots. For snack, the deer was made out of bread,
cream cheese, raisins, m&m's and pretzels. They also made
a deer picture using their hand prints as the antlers.

They also learned that deer tracks are somewhat shaped
like hearts, and they painted heart-shaped foam brown
(I was going to use sponges, but didn't have any) and stamped
it onto brown paper.

I read the book, "The Kissing Hand." I printed off these
two worksheets; a raccoon puzzle and find the letter r
worksheet from kidssoup.com.

Hattie made a baby raccoon puppet since a few weeks ago
Celie had made a mama raccoon puppet at a story time at
the library.

I am hoping to add more cooking activities to our week, and
I happened to find this book that will be perfect for us. It is
a step-by-step kids cookbook. We talked about the difference
between a teaspoon, tablespoon, whole, half and quarter.
If anyone knows of any other step-by-step picture recipe books,
let me know. We made Raccoon's Raisin salad. She ate most
of it.

I forgot all about making pine cone bird feeders! I used to love to make those when I was little. Thanks for sharing lots of awesome ideas!
